I just love Caesar Millan. He is my hero and I haven't missed one of his Dog Whisperer episodes on National Geographic. For those who don't know who Caesar Millan is, check out his site http://www.cesarsway.com/
Cesar Millan's philosophy is that we need to be a calm and assertive pack leader for our dog(s). This projected energy of the human, in turn, can induce calm and submissive behavior in a dog. If the human is not fulfilling this role as pack leader, then the dog will often resort to unwanted behavior.
Being calm and assertive does not only apply to dogs, it plays a role in how we handle our clients, business partners and more. Remaining calm and cool under pressure makes it easier to rationalize whilst becoming overly anxious and worried can lead to irrational decisions – emotions cloud clear thinking.
But remaining calm is not all: we need to intend things to happen. That means that we need to take action and so an assertive role must be coupled with a calm energy. It certainly does not mean calm-passive or calm-aggressive. Being passive means taking a more uninvolved, unresisting approach. Being aggressive is being forceful, intrusive or threatening. Being aggressive creates more tension.
Assertiveness is the balance between passiveness and aggressiveness. Be confident in your vision and follow through with forceful action to make that vision become a reality.
